Remembering Ray Leonard’s Grueling TKO of Ayub Kalule
Sugar Ray Leonard defeated unbeaten WBA light middleweight champion Ayub Kalule by ninth-round technical knockout at the Houston Astrodome to become a two-division world champion on June 25, 1981. Billed as “Astrowars,” the bout awarded Leonard the WBA and The Ring 154-pound titles and preceded his historic welterweight title unification fight against Thomas Hearns three months later.
