Ray Mancini returned home on July 24, 1982, for the first defense of his WBA lightweight title, carrying the expectations of an entire region into Mollenkopf Stadium in Warren, Ohio. Before an estimated crowd of 20,000, the Youngstown favorite gave his supporters exactly what they wanted, stopping former champion Ernesto España at 2:59 of the sixth round in a scheduled 15-round championship bout.
