Edward Vazquez Voices Frustration After Narrow Loss to Joe Cordina

Edward Vazquez couldn't hide his frustration in the wake of his closely contested loss to Joe Cordina on Saturday night. The two fighters went toe-to-toe for Cordina's IBF junior lightweight title at Casino de Monte Carlo in Monte Carlo, Monaco. While Cordina was a 14-1 favorite per DraftKings sportsbook, Vazquez put up a competitive performance in the 12-round battle. The judges' scorecards varied, with Judge Jeremy Hayes scoring it a draw at 114-114, but judges Deon Dwarte and Jean-Robert Laine gave Cordina the edge by scoring eight rounds each in his favor. As a result, Cordina was declared the winner with a 116-112 decision on their cards. Eddie Hearn, the promoter of Cordina's company, Matchroom Boxing, admitted that the fight was closer than Dwarte and Laine's scoring suggested. Vazquez, however, strongly disagreed with the majority-decision defeat. In his post-fight interview in the ring, he expressed his determination to return. "I'll be back, man," he declared. "Everyone in this room and everyone watching around the world knows I won. Eddie Hearn knows I won. But guess what? They did it to me again! But they can't stop that Fort Worth kid, man. Texas in the house. We made noise. You know what it is. I'll be back, baby." The reference to "again" was made in light of Vazquez's previous professional loss, a 10-round split-decision defeat to Raymond Ford in February 2022 at Footprint Center in Phoenix. Ford, also represented by Hearn's Matchroom Boxing, claimed victory in a close fight. In the bout against Cordina, CompuBox's statistics showed a near-equal number of punches landed for both fighters. Cordina connected with 170-of-527 punches, just six more than Vazquez's 164-of-568. Cordina held an advantage in power punches (143-of-331 to 128-of-405), while Vazquez had the upper hand in jabs (36-of-163 to 27-of-196). Cordina, the champion, revealed that his trainer, Tony Sims, had a tense conversation with him before the 10th round. Sims believed the fight was "probably level." While Cordina acknowledged that his victory wasn't resounding, he felt that he had done enough to claim the main event broadcasted worldwide on DAZN. Vazquez engaged in a heated argument with Cordina about the official outcome before they were separated and left the ring. Vazquez maintained that Cordina couldn't execute his game plan during the fight and couldn't land the right hand he had emphasized in the buildup to the contest. The frustration on Vazquez's part serves as a reminder of the intense emotions and personal stakes involved in the world of professional boxing, where every decision can have a profound impact on a fighter's career and reputation.
