British Boxing Vet John Ryder Calls It a Day After Jaime Munguia Defeat
In a move that surprised many, 35-year-old British boxer John Ryder has officially announced his retirement from professional boxing. The decision comes just 10 days after Ryder suffered a defeat at the hands of Jaime Munguia in Phoenix, Arizona. Ryder, a former WBO interim super-middleweight titleholder, had a notable career, challenging Saul "Canelo" Alvarez for undisputed gold in May 2023. Despite a valiant effort, Canelo emerged victorious on points in his native Mexico. Ryder's last bout in January ended with a ninth-round stoppage by Munguia. Expressing his sentiment, Ryder stated, "It is with a heavy heart that I have come to the decision to hang up my gloves and retire from professional boxing." Reflecting on his journey, he acknowledged the incredible experiences, from fighting at iconic venues like the O2 Arena and T-Mobile in Vegas to the memorable clash in Guadalajara, Mexico. Looking ahead, Ryder revealed his next venture, saying, "Although my professional career as a boxer is now over, the sport won't be able to get rid of me that easily, and I look forward to officially starting my new career as a coach working alongside Tony [Sims] at the Matchroom Gym very shortly.
