Hearn Plots AJ's Return: May or June Fight Against Fury or Dubois
In an interview with The Stomping Ground, Matchroom Boxing promoter Eddie Hearn shared updates on Anthony Joshua’s expected return to the ring. While no official date has been set, Hearn confirmed that the former world champion is preparing for a comeback in May or June 2024.
Hearn pointed out that Joshua’s most likely opponents include current IBF heavyweight champion Daniel Dubois or Tyson Fury. He reassured fans that Joshua is not dealing with any severe injuries and noted that minor physical setbacks are common for heavyweights over 30.
Addressing the potential for a Joshua vs. Fury fight, Hearn emphasized that it is the biggest and most profitable option for both boxers. “Tyson Fury can choose to make 20 million fighting Daniel Dubois or double that against Anthony Joshua. The natural fight is AJ vs. Tyson Fury,” he said. Hearn also maintained that Joshua, despite recent defeats, is still one of the biggest draws in boxing.
The promoter dismissed the idea of a matchup against Martin Bakole, explaining that while Bakole is a talented fighter, he does not bring significant financial value. “Not in a million years. Martin Bakole is far down the list. This is prizefighting, and he needs to become a mandatory contender to be in the conversation,” Hearn said, referencing Bakole’s likely purse bid against Agit Kabayel.
Hearn reinforced his belief that Joshua remains a key figure in the heavyweight division and is confident that he will return to the ring in top form, ready to face elite competition. Fans are now eagerly waiting to see if the highly anticipated Joshua vs. Fury clash finally materializes.
