Gervonta Davis next opponent and fight date officially confirmed
Gervonta ‘Tank’ Davis is set to make his second appearance of the year this December, with his opponent now officially confirmed. After being elevated from WBA (Regular) lightweight champion to full world champion last year, Davis made his first title defense in June, stopping Frank Martin in a knockout performance that earned wide acclaim.
While fans eagerly anticipated potential unification bouts against WBC champion Shakur Stevenson or IBF champion Vasyl Lomachenko, both fights appear to be off the table. Stevenson is gearing up to face mandatory challenger William Zepeda, and Lomachenko has declined the fight with Davis, citing a lack of motivation.
This left Davis searching for an opponent, and rumors swirled that WBA super-featherweight champion Lamont Roach would step up to the challenge. Today, the WBA confirmed that Roach has been granted special permission to move up to 135 lbs and face Davis on December 14th. Should Roach emerge victorious, he will have five days to decide whether to continue campaigning at super-featherweight or permanently move up to lightweight and keep his title.
This event, taking place on Amazon Prime Video PPV, will also feature David Benavidez’s confirmed undercard showdown against Jesse Hart.
